When it was clear his team wasn't going to be in the pool for the foreseeable future, York YMCA head coach John Nelson went through the seven stages of grief.Â
He and his swimmers spend huge amounts of time training. They've helped the York Y's competitive program remain a national powerhouse by dedicating themselves to mastering every aspect of their craft.Â
But like most athletes and coaches, they found themselves sidelined as the new coronavirus has halted sports competitions across the world.Â
"Denial, acceptance ... you go through all of them," said Nelson said of the stages of grief he experienced over the past few weeks. "You want to know how long it's going to be."
